How to Access Short Interest and Crowding Datasets in the OP Data Cloud

As a portfolio manager, accessing accurate and timely data is critical to making informed investment decisions. Our Data Cloud offers a comprehensive suite of datasets, including detailed information on short interest and crowding from industry-leading data providers, to help you stay ahead of market trends and manage risk effectively.

This support article will guide you through the process of finding and utilizing datasets from:

1. Understanding Short Interest and Crowding Datasets

Short Interest Data: This dataset provides insights into the number of shares that have been sold short but not yet covered or closed out. It is a valuable indicator of market sentiment, identify potential short squeeze risks, or helping you gauge the bearish outlook on a particular stock or sector. High short interest can indicate potential downward pressure on stock prices, while decreasing short interest might suggest improving sentiment.

Crowding Data: Crowding data identifies securities that are heavily traded or held by multiple investors, identifying overbought securities or sectors, and indicating potential overexposure or systemic risk. Understanding crowding can help you avoid or mitigate risks associated with herd behavior in the market by helping you avoid investments that are prone to significant price corrections due to mass liquidation. Diversify your portfolio by reducing exposure to highly crowded assets.

2. Accessing the Data Cloud & Finding Short Interest Data

To access the short interest and crowding datasets, follow these steps:

1. Login to the Platform: Ensure you have your credentials ready and log in to our platform.

2. Navigate to the Data Cloud: From the home screen, select the "Data" option from the navigation menu. This will take you to the central repository of datasets available for purchase.

3. Search for Short Interest Data: Use the dynamic filters panel on the left side of the Data Cloud page and select "Borrow / Positioning". This will filter the datasets to display those related to short interest and crowding.

4. Explore Available Datasets: Browse through the list of available short interest datasets. Each dataset will have a brief description, detailing the scope, frequency of updates, and data sources. One-pagers can be downloaded for each dataset using the download icon on the top-right corner of the dataset card, if available.

5. Reach out to Customer Success: Upon finding on the dataset that best suits your needs, please reach out to [email protected] to request access to a dataset.

3. Utilizing the Data in Portfolio Management

Once a dataset is provisioned to your account, you can access the short interest data in a variety of workflows, mainly:

  • standalone, per-security short interest trends, via security profile, helping visualize if short interest risk has increased or decreased over time

  • screen for securities that match a particular search criteria, via market.securities

    • including screening out securities with high short squeeze risk from being including in custom baskets / hedges

  • evaluate position exposures to short interest and crowding, via portfolio.analyze.assets

  • use short interest, crowding exposure scores as a constraint for portfolio optimizations

Conclusion

By effectively utilizing our Data Cloud’s short interest and crowding datasets, you can gain deeper insights into market dynamics and enhance your investment strategies.
